Alright, here it is. MLB season crunch time is upon us. The portion of the year where literally anything can happen. Even in this matchup when the ending looks foregone before the first pitch is even thrown. The Diamondbacks are currently fighting for their first chance to be relevant in many many years, while the Orioles have taken the league by storm. And while I simply cannot say that the Diamondbacks are better than the Orioles because I’m not someone who pretends the earth is flat, I do think that desperation can make crazy things happen during a series. And my goodness will the Diamondbacks be playing desperate this series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a team that is looking to make the postseason for the first time in what feels like eons. They started off the season so red-hot, and have fallen off so hard in the second half of the season that it’s honestly felt like two different teams at times. But even though they have fallen off they still somehow have a path into the wildcard games and thus the postseason and I can only imagine how badly these guys are going to want to make it. I expect hitters like Corbin Carroll and Christian Walker to come out firing in a way that you can only hit when you see your season ending prematurely. I expect Zac Gallen and/or Merrill Kelly to come out firing from the mound. Professional players don’t like going home before they have to (unless they’re Ben Simmons), and the Diamondbacks are going to be playing this series like it’s their last.
The Baltimore Orioles may not have that same drive as the Diamondbacks but who says they need it? They have made a legitimate case this season that they are the best team in baseball hands down. They have a record of 83 and 49 and are atop one of the best divisions in baseball this year the American League East. I don’t think you need me to tell you some of the names I’m about to get into, but I do need to hit a certain word count so why not give these guys some more praise? The Baltimore Orioles have eight different batters with more than 10 home runs this season. That is an insane batting order to send out in games. When every player a pitcher may face can send the ball yard that picture is gonna be real nervous throwing in those balls. Their top hitter this season has been Anthony Santander who has had 25 home runs and 77 RBIs leading the way on the offensive part of the game for this amazing team.
