Game Analysis:
As the MLB season winds down every year, there’s a clear set of contenders, some bubble teams, and then some really bad teams who you honestly have to imagine just want the season to be over already. This early September series between the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox is one where both teams just want to move onto the 2024 season. If there’s anything for fans of these teams to look forward to, it’s the September callups, where teams can call up a few extra players, so this will potentially give fans a chance to see some young prospects get a look at the big league level.
Let’s break down the visiting team in this matchup, the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers come into Chicago around 10 games out of first place, so at this point they are just trying to figure out who on their current team they can build around next year. The Tigers have had a massive surprise in rookie Kerry Carpenter, who was not that highly regarded as a prospect, but has broken out this year in a big way, and is hitting cleanup for the Tigers most games. Former first overall pick Spencer Torkelson has also found his stride in the second half of the season, after a slow start, and he definitely seems like a player the Tigers can pencil into their lineup for a while. The Tigers do have some good arms too, especially Tarik Skubal and Eduardo Rodriguez, who rejected a trade to the Dodgers at the trade deadline. If the Tigers can somehow get Javy Baez back on track, who has struggled since signing a massive 6 year deal, that would improve their future outlook greatly.
The team who will be hosting the Tigers is the absolute dumpster fire of a franchise in the Chicago White Sox. To say it’s been a disappointing season for the White Sox would be an understatement, as just about everything has gone wrong for them, whether it’s Tim Anderson getting knocked out in the middle of an already down season, or Dylan Cease looking like a shell of his former self. As a result, they sit in the bottom 5 of the MLB standings, and had a big selloff at the trade deadline, in which they were actually able to get really good returns for the assets they traded. However, they still seem reluctant to a full rebuild, which is clearly what this team is, but at least they finally fired GM Rick Hahn, who once famously promised a championship when he told a reporter to “ask me after the parade”. Instead, the Sox did not win one single playoff series under Hahn. There’s one reason and one reason only to still be watching this year’s Sox team, and that is outfielder Luis Robert Jr. He is one of the most exciting players to watch in the MLB, but unfortunately I think the rest of his teammates have checked out of this season a while ago, so I’ll take the Tigers to win this series.
