Game Analysis:

When the Angels went all in at the deadline, they probably didn’t think they would drop all the way to 4th in their division and out of the postseason picture, but that’s exactly where they find themselves here in early September. This has led to them waiving several of their key trade deadline pickups, including Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, most likely signaling the end of Shohei Ohtani’s tenure in Anaheim. While the Angels are just trying to get this season over with already, the team they are hosting, the Baltimore Orioles, are having their best season in ages. The Orioles seem to have had the perfect rebuild, stacking their farm system with boatloads of top prospects, and a bunch of those prospects have already taken Baltimore to new heights. It will definitely be worth monitoring how the super young and inexperienced Orioles perform as we head into the postseason, but at the end of the day, you don’t get the #1 seed in the American League if you’re not legit.

Let’s dig into the visiting Baltimore Orioles. This is a very unexpected season for this team, which has one of the lowest payrolls in the sport and as well as one of the youngest rosters. However, that has not stopped them one bit, as they’ve ridden their young stars all the way to the AL’s #1 seed with about a month left to play. Gunnar Henderson is going to be the AL rookie of the year, and Adley Rutschman is already one of the best all-around catchers in the MLB in just his second year. In fact, the Orioles have not been swept once since Rutschman was called up in the middle of last season. The Orioles were just dealt a massive blow however, losing elite closer Felix Bautista to injury, and they simply have to hope he can return in the playoffs, as he’s been arguably the best closer in the league this year and absolutely critical to the Orioles’ success so far. When healthy, Bautista and setup man Yennier Cano form as good of an 8th/9th inning bullpen duo as there is in the league, so it’ll be worth monitoring how much this injury affects them.

The host team in this series, the Los Angeles Angels, are having one of the more embarrassing seasons in recent memory. This is a team that has had two of the best players of all time in Ohtani and Trout for the last 5+ years, yet have failed to make the postseason a single time with them. So when the Angels finally had a chance to sneak into the postseason this year, albeit a small one, they went all in. This was despite having the best player in the league on an expiring contract and having the ability to get a gigantic haul for him at the trade deadline rather than most likely losing him for nothing this offseason. It would be an understatement to say that this has not worked out for the Angels, as almost every player they acquired was recently waived following a brutal post-deadline stretch for LA. One team in this series is still in a tight playoff race, while the other is counting down the days until their best player is wearing another team’s jersey, so give me the Orioles to continue their road dominance and take this series in LA.

The Orioles are a team looking to make a run in the playoffs. Bet on Baltimore and get your own Friday Beers merch!
