Game Analysis:

College basketball is back, which means that all the chaos that comes along with it has begun. The first bit of that took place on opening night, when the 4th ranked Michigan State Spartans were upset at home by 16.5 point underdog James Madison Dukes. Michigan State is known for having notoriously difficult out of conference schedules to start the year, so maybe they were caught off guard by a “lesser” team. However, they will have a chance to redeem themselves on Thursday, when they host the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.

The visiting Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles of the Ohio Valley conference come into this matchup with an 0-1 record, as they dropped their opener 75-63 to the Saint Louis Billikens. They had a pretty big rotation in that game, as 11 players saw playing time, including double digit minutes for 10 of them. However, only one player managed to record double digit points, as Jordan Tillmon led the team with 15 points, and he also was the rebounds leader with 8. They will probably have to shorten their rotation when they take on Michigan State, but they should be well rested for that game if nothing else.

The hosting Michigan State Spartans entered this season as one of the national title favorites, as evidenced by their number 4 preseason rankings, but it is clear they will have work to do following an opening night upset. It will be critical for them to get back on track in this one, before they take on Duke next week. Star guard Tyson Walker led the way with 35 points in the opener, but missed 6 free throws and all 5 three point attempts, so he will look to keep putting up big numbers while increasing efficiency moving forward. Highly regarded recruit Coen Carr, had a nice debut, as he scored 14 points on just 6 field goal attempts, and added 6 boards. This team has all the talent in the world, they just need to build up their chemistry with several new pieces to the roster, and I believe Tom Izzo will get them there. For now, I think they will have a nice bounceback game and make easy work of Southern Indiana, as the talent disparity between the two teams is just too much.
