Week 5 brings us a matchup between a pair of teams looking to jumpstart their seasons, as the New York Jets travel to Denver to take on the Broncos. Each team comes into this game with a 1-3, but each also has reason for optimism following last week. While the Jets came up just short vs. the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, their QB Zach Wilson had arguably the best game of his career, and actually became the first QB to statistically outduel Patrick Mahomes head to head in the NFL. The Broncos on the other hand, came back from down 21 late in the 3rd quarter in Chicago to stun the Bears, and get their first win of the Sean Payton era.
Let’s take a look at the visiting New York Jets, who are coming off a heartbreaking 23-20 loss to the Chiefs last week, in a game many feel was officiated in favor of the Chiefs, especially in the 4th quarter. If there’s one positive for the Jets, it’s the fact that QB Zach Wilson finally looked like the player he was expected to be when he was drafted 2nd overall just a few years ago. The Jets found themselves in an early 17-0 deficit in the first quarter, but following a safety by their defense, the offense woke up and was able to eventually tie the game, before the Chiefs added what would become a game winning field goal to take the game. Despite this loss the vibes seem to be high right now in New York following Zach Wilson’s performance, as this is a Jets team with a great defense, but an offense which has hindered them going back to last year. If Zach Wilson can come even close to what he looked like against the Chiefs on a consistent basis, then this becomes a real dangerous team moving forward.
The host team in this game, the Denver Broncos, were finally able to get the monkey off their back last week, picking up a 31-28 win against the Bears in Chicago for their first victory of the season. Head Coach Sean Payton was brought in to fix Russell Wilson, and he’s done just that so far, despite the team’s record, as Wilson has been one of the most efficient QBs in the NFL so far this season. Unfortunately the defense, which was this team’s strength last season, has been very bad and is probably to blame for Denver’s slow start. They showed flashes against Chicago at least, including a huge strip sack fumble recovery touchdown in the 4th quarter to tie the game at 28-28, and a game sealing interception off of Justin Fields on the Bears final drive. I think the altitude will certainly play a factor in this game, and I cannot trust Zach Wilson back to back weeks just yet, so give me the Broncos to get their second straight win in this one.
