Game Analysis:
The Union against Nashville. Normally I’d say this is Nashville’s game to lose, but they just lost to the Chicago Fire, so honestly viva Philly. The Union already has some experience beating some great MLS teams this season, and Nashville is as phony of a top MLS team as it gets. So let’s watch one team that’s been in the CONCACAF Champions League beat a team from Tennessee.
Nashville SC is not as good as its record suggests. They have some losses this season against some of the worst the MLS has to offer, and they don’t even have the luxury of blaming it on playing in multiple competitions. Their entire soccer team, as currently constructed, rests on the success or failure of one man. That man is Hany Mukhtar. This MLS season he has thirteen goals and eight assists, which yes, I’ll admit, is insane, but no one else on the team even has half of that. The second-highest scorer for Nashville is Fafa Picault with four. The second-highest assister for the team is Daniel Lovitz with three. That is not exactly a sustainable model for success for any team sport. Much less one that has eleven men on a team.
The Philadelphia Union, while being sixth in the league compared to Nahsville’s second, is the much more complete team. They have been playing against some of the best teams in North America this season in the CONCACAF Champions League, which gives them the edge in terms of the competition they’ve faced. This multitude of competitions has also stressed to them the importance of having a well-rounded team which is most evident in their stat sheet. The Philadelphia Union has one man with ten goals this season and two with seven. All three of them have more goals tallied than Nashville’s second-top scorer. They also have two players with 5 or more assists. They’ve also already showcased that they can beat the teams who hold the better records in the MLS whether they are home or away. They already managed to beat the New England Revolution three to zero earlier in the season.
