Man oh man will this be an electric game. As the top two teams in the Big 12 matchup for the last time, we bid goodbye to the Big 12 Red River Rivalry. The next time they play it will be in the SEC so we should cherish this very special game. Both of these teams are undefeated at 5-0, and only one will remain so after this Saturday’s Noon kickoff. Here is what you should know.
Personally, I don’t think the Sooners are getting enough love this year. Sure, their schedule has not been the most difficult but they’ve beaten some alright teams and no games have really gotten out of hand for Oklahoma. Let’s start with offense. Oklahoma has one of the best offenses in the entire NCAA, averaging over 515 total yards which puts them in 10th, but they’re also third in points scored per game with 47.4. Texas doesn’t have a bad offense by any standard, but man the Sooners still have looked significantly better on that side of the ball so far this year. The Sooner defense is also solid, especially against the run which Texas has utilized a lot. Dillon Gabriel has looked so so good, with four of his players already over the 200-yard mark, with three of those four having 279 yards or more. The run offense has also been dynamic and spread around with several backs looking dangerous. Will that be enough to upset Texas in Austin?
If you ask me, or Matthew McConaughey for that matter, I think we would both say probably not. Texas is ranked higher and is the favorite in this game for a reason. Well several reasons actually. Sure the Sooners might have the better offense on paper, but Texas has played some better defenses and still come out with the victory. Also, the offense is not that much worse, being top 20 in total yards and tied for 30th in points scored per game. The Longhorns also have the better defense in my opinion, allowing fewer yards a game despite playing some better offenses like Alabama. Quin Ewers has looked so good with 10 touchdowns and only one pick through 5 games. His receivers are so good, with one of them already over 340 yards, and five total players with over 100 receiving yards. The run game is arguably more impressive, with running back Jonathon Brooks already boasting 597 rushing yards and five touchdowns. I think Texas is the more complete and better team, let alone more battle-tested. Give me the Longhorns in this one, I think Texas is back!
