Game Analysis:
What is the perfect way for this elite Arizona team to get back on track? Winning a series against this Atlanta Braves team. This is a series that is very winnable for the Diamondbacks, especially when they are in form. There was a point not too long ago when they were the best team in baseball and wins like the ones they will undoubtedly get against the Braves will bring them back into that conversation.
The Atlanta Braves are what the kids would call an ‘ok’ baseball team. They sit atop the National League East with a record of 61 and 31. However, they are currently coming off the back of a lost series to the Chicago White Sox of all teams. I’m not saying that that’s what makes or breaks a team, because if it was a whole lot more MLB teams would be screwed, but it’s definitely not a great look when you’re trying to be at the top of the top. I will say when it comes to batting there isn’t much better than the Braves. Their First Baseman Matt Olsen currently sits at 30 moon shots and 77 RBIs. I am not entirely sure how the man has put up these numbers when his teammates are Ronald Acuna Jr and Ozzie Albies, but somehow he’s managed it. He’s second in the league in both of those stats by the way so yea, pretty good. One thing that does concern me slightly about the Braves is their fielding. They’re not the worst at it, but it’s definitely the weaker side of their baseball team. Somehow, no one on the team that plays consistently has managed to maintain their 100% fielding percentage. That’s the most winning of formulas if I’m being entirely honest.
The Diamondbacks on the other hand have quite a few more players who are quite a bit more consistent remaining in that 100% fielding range. They’re also no scrubs when it comes to the batting side of the ball either. Corbin Caroll has himself 18 return-to-senders to go along with 48 RBIs, but he isn’t alone at the top. Christian Walker also has 18 ding-dongs, but he adds 58 RBIs to his total. It also doesn’t hurt that their batting averages are both .257 and above, so not only do they have the power hitting down, but they also are consistent. That is a dangerous combo for any pitcher to be staring down. In fact, every single hitter on the Diamondbacks that have more than ten home runs is hitting .240 or better. Good luck to the Brave’s pitching crew. You have my condolences.
