It’s an NL West battle as the Arizona Diamondbacks play host to the Padres of San Diego. These teams are both still vying for playoff position at third and fourth in the NL West, so here is what you should know about a pretty important series with playoff implications for both teams.
It’s been a while since the Diamondbacks have felt competitive like this. Sure they’re only .504 and third place in their division, but they’re in a tough division and in the middle of a rebuild. They do have a slightly better offense than the Padres, averaging more runs scored a game. Their batters have a higher average average, OPS, and they steal more bases. Ketel Marte has been very good hitting .284, as have Corbin Carroll and the currently injured Gabriel Moreno who are batting .276 and .270 respectively. The pitching staff has struggled a decent amount, but Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly have been very solid and reliable. The Diamondbacks are only 3 wins ahead of the Padres, will this series change their positions in the standings?
If you ask me I don’t think so. Sure the Padres have much more star power than Arizona, but how has that worked out for them? I’ll give you a hint; not well. The Padres are 4 games under .500 with some pretty middle of the pack stats. Their offense, despite all of the star power, is less effective than the Diamondbacks. They do have a bright spot which is their defense, only allowing 4.1 runs a game which ties them for fourth in the MLB. Xander has been kind of disappointing, Soto is finally hitting his stride, but the real best offensive player has been Ha-Seong Kim which is absolutely insane. Starting pitching has been alright, Blake Snell has been an absolute stud as has Wacha. Honestly this team has been pretty disappointing while the Diamondbacks have been the opposite. I think they might have some trouble with this offense leading to Arizona taking this series.
