Game Analysis:

It is finally time for another installment in one of the greatest rivalries in all of major league baseball. The sub .500 Mets will play host to the 38-29 Yankees in a Subway Series matchup that should prove to be both important and extremely entertaining. Let’s break it down.

Man oh man is pitching going to be the storyline in this matchup. Severino vs Scherzer then Cole vs Verlander will be must watch baseball. Another key theme is injuries. Both teams will be without their star sluggers, as Aaron Judge has a sprained toe, and Polar Pete has a bone bruise and wrist sprain. Now without Judge the Yankees already mediocre offense has further faltered, and they have not had a game where they scored double digits so far this entire month. Even with their offensive struggles, they’re barely under .500 in June which is mostly due to their stellar pitching and defense. The two pitchers who will start in this series have been solid, sure Severino has struggled but has only played in 4 games pitching less than 21 innings combined. The Yanks are fourth in the majors with only 3.9 runs allowed a game, and their opponents are hitting an average of .225 which makes New York tied for the best BAA in the league. Their pitchers also have top five ERA and WHIP averages, making this bullpen and defense one of the most lethal in the world.

Now the Mets have absolutely been underperforming this year. 2-8 in their last ten is unacceptable, and something will have to change. If you ask me, this Subway Series is the perfect time to right the ship and inflict some pain into a rival at the same time. Like I said before, the Yankees offense has struggled, and Verlander/Scherzer is the perfect one-two power punch to play against a lineup that has really struggled against righties who throw gas. The Mets also have a slight edge in offensive production. While they average .1 less runs a game than the Yankees, they hit the ball more, have better batting averages, get on base more, and steal more bases. If you ask me the Mets will win at least one game this two game series, and could be primed to sweep a team who is banged up and struggles against the type of pitching they will likely face. I like the Mets here.
