Game Analysis:
Gotta love a National League East grudge match. The Phillies take on the Marlins in a series that pits the second and third-ranked teams from this division up against each other in what could be one of the better series of the year. The Phillies have been one of the more up-and-down teams this season so they could honestly win this one. But if your force me to choose who I think might come out with the W, I’d have to lean toward Miami on this one.
As I said earlier, the Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the more confusing teams to watch this season. They have amazing players like the one and only Nick Castellanos who has 12 homers and a batting average of .312 like he’s trying to interrupt apology announcements from spokesmen every night. They also have Kyle Schwarber who is the definition of up-and-down. He is either hitting a moonshot to the third deck, which he has done 22 times this season, or he’s not getting a hit as showcased by his .189 batting average. Somehow this guy either makes perfect contact with the ball or he just straight-up misses it. It’s not the worst problem to have considering that he’s tied for 6th in the entire MLB for home runs hit this season, but it’s definitely not the best look. The fact that this team can’t seem to string together wins has left them with a 45 ad 36 record, and sitting third in their division. Which is ok, but not great.
The Marlins are ever so lightly ahead of the Phillies and it mostly bakes down to consistency. They are second in their division with a record of 50 and 37 because they have guys who don’t need a million at-bats to pump a dinger. Take Jorge Soler for example, he has 22 dingers which would put him also at joint-6th in the MLB in that category but instead of an abysmal .189 batting average, he has himself a .248 batting average. And while yes, Jorge is the Designated Hitter for his team, and yes his job is solely to place balls next to the flag on the moon, that doesn’t excuse Kyle from having such a bad batting average. Only one person on the entire Miami Marlins roster has a batting average worse than Kyle’s and he’s played in 14 games this entire season so probably not an All-Star. I would also like to take this time to shout out Luis Arraez who has a .387 batting average through 81 games played which leads the league in that statistic.
The Marlins are a much more consistent team than the Phillies and that will win them this game. Bet on either team and get your own Friday Beers merch!
