Game Analysis:

I’m loving these June baseball series. All around some evenly-matched baseball teams trying to turn their season around as we near the halfway mark of the season. Both of these teams can be described right now as…alright. Neither one is really wowing the sports world but both are primed to make some runs as we head deeper into the summer. Assuming the Phillies don’t get swept by the Braves they’ll actually continue a run they’ve started since April/May, and it’s for this reason I’m leaning towards them as the winners here.

The New York Mets have been, as Buster Olney puts it a ‘colossal disappointment’. Tell me how the most expensive roster in the history of baseball (look it up) has so far this season gone 34 and 39 with no real look of turning it around. I mean usually, you spend more money on something to make that thing better. If I bought a pair of headlights for my car because they were advertised to help me see farther in pitch-black conditions, and they didn’t even turn on, you could bet that I’d be pretty unhappy. Now, having said all that, they’re not the worst. Their first baseman Pete Alonso has been doing his best to will this team to win. He’s got 22 home runs this season already which has it at solo second in the league for baseball shipped overseas, and he’s topped that off with 49 RBI’s which is joint 12th. It might be nice if he hit the ball a little more consistently, but hey, with that production you can’t be too upset at the guy.

If you wanna talk about a guy who either wraps the ball up, puts a nice little bow on it, and sends it on the bye-bye express to some unknown location or gets pitched out it’s Kyle Schwarber. This man leads the Phillies in home runs by a mile with 20 but has a batting average of .191. Imagine how good this team would be if his bat could find the ball even just a little bit more consistently. In terms of consistent hitting though I would be remiss not to mention Nick Castellanos. Whether he is interrupting apologies or just trying to get on base the man gets the ball in play. His batting average is .315 which is solo 6th in the entire league for the stat. That’s pretty freaking impressive considering I wouldn’t even see the ball if I tried to swing on an MLB pitcher, just the Ump calling it a strike.

This series is going to come down to which of these two high-expectation teams wants to start living up to the hype. I like Philly a little more but bet on whoever you like, and get your own Friday Beers merch!
