Game Analysis:
The Saints and the Chargers, two teams that are looking for a redemption season after underperforming at the end of last year. One made upgrades through free agency and the trade market, while the other tried to bolster their team through the draft. If I’m being honest I think the Saints play more of their starters for more drives than the Chargers do, and that is the biggest reason why I’m picking them to win this game. This ain’t the regular season, it ain’t even practice. It’s preseason, and it’s time for the boys who need it to work for a living.
The Chargers normally are a team that could definitely beat the Saints. They have a top-five to ten quarterback in Justin Herbert (depending on who you ask), and a great group of offensive weapons around him. You have a current receiving group of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Quentin Johnson. The fact that your third guy is an elite rookie prospect this season with a load of upside is a beautiful and dangerous weapon to have on your team. However, this is the preseason, which makes me think that maybe only Johnson gets a real look at the field so the coaches can see what he’s made of and how many targets he should be taking away from his squad mates. In the same breadth, their starting running back, Austin Ekeler, is one of the best in the business when it comes to running the ball. You combine that with his receiving prowess and you’ve got yourself one heck of a footballer. But will he play? I’m not too sure, and being not too sure has me leaning away from this Charger’s team. I don’t know if Nick Bosa or Derwin James will touch the field in this matchup. That staunch defense might be a group of rookies and UDFAs. I just don’t know, and it makes me not too confident about this team’s preseason success.
The Saints on the other hand are gonna be looking at all of their players in depth. They just stole Derek Carr from the Raiders, and a new QB needs a chance to adapt to his system, so the more preseason reps they can get him, the more they will get him. And I don’t care who the player is if a starting QB is going up against a backup QB, I’m gonna recommend siding with the starting QB all day. Additionally, they’re going to want him to get used to his receiving targets, so expect a guy like Chris Olave to at least get a solid amount of reps on the field with his new QB1. With their starting running back out for at least the first three games they’re also going to want to get a look at Jamaal Williams who they signed for a solid amount of money from the Lions. I don’t know if he’ll be a superstar this year but he’s probably going up against the second team of the Chargers defensive line which I can imagine will allow him to go to work in ways he only wished he could in the regular season. This Saint’s team isn’t going to win because they’re overall a better team, they’re gonna win because they’re more likely to give their starters minutes to test out what the team looks like when the regular season rolls around.
The Saints are gonna play starters, and the Chargers probably aren’t. That’s what this game comes down to, so bet on the Saints and get your own Friday Beers merch!
