Game Analysis:
It is time for the third major tournament of the year. So far this golf season has been insane, with incredible storylines, wild controversy, and most of all, amazing golf being played. Here is what you need to know about the 123rd US Open being played at Los Angeles Country Club.
I’ll start with an overall winner. Now there are a lot of guys playing great golf when the lights are the brightest. Three names come to mind, and those are Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and Brooks Koepka. Scottie Scheffler is playing some of the most consistent golf I have ever seen. The funny thing is he has to keep this pace up for so much longer to compare to Tiger. Scheffler right now is the favorite to win, and for good reason. He is +700 outright, and I still think there is value on that. He performed well in other Major tournaments, has played great recently, and is the world number one golfer for a reason. I like him to win it all.
Now I have an interesting pick I thought there was some value on. Max Homa is a SoCal boy through and through, born in raised in Los Angeles. While Los Angeles Country Club might not be his home course, it’s right in his neighborhood in an area where he is very comfortable playing golf. Homa is one of the few players on tour who has experience playing LACC under competitive pressure, as he dominated the 2017 Walker Cup there. While Max has seemed to struggle a bit later in these Major tournaments, he is the number 7 golfer in the world according to the World Golf Rankings, and personally I think having him at +115 to finish in the top 20 is a pretty solid value play.
Now the US Open has had some dark horse surprise winners in the past, so let’s pick one out to maybe sprinkle as a long shot. Justin Thomas for some reason is +5000 to win. This guy has already won two Majors, and is a top 20 ranked golfer at number 16 in the world. While this bet is absolutely a long shot, JT has shown he can perform under the bright lights, and this can be treated as a kind of lottery ticket. Please do not think that pick is anywhere near a lock!
