It’s the middle of June, it’s late at night, and it’s a Saturday. You’re looking at your blank TV screen shivering from the withdrawals of only having Baseball to watch when it comes to American sports. As much as we all love America’s pastime, it can get repetitive after the 70th time watching your favorite team get beaten 9 to 1. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was another sport you could watch to change it up? Perhaps an international game where you can root for the entirety of America? Well, look no further than the Gold Cup and Team USA as they take on Jamaica. This is going to be a battering that will leave you wondering why this team didn’t go farther in the World Cup.
Let’s first discuss this Jamaican team, which no disrespect, but isn’t full of the world’s best and brightest players. That’s not to say that these players are the worst, they’re just young. When you pull up the roster you see Wolverhampton Wanderers (academy), Leicester City (academy), Manchester United (academy), even the player who plays for Fulham is a U18 player. When this team gets older and begins to play more regular minutes in this top tier of soccer then you might see this become more of a game, but for now…it might look like the New England Revolution playing my youth soccer team.
Team USA on the other hand is full of guys that have both already played in a World Cup, and guys who are hungry to punch their ticket into the next World Cup. Guys like absolute legend Matt Turner who has not only played in a World Cup making fantastic saves, not only just won himself a golden glove in the CONCACAF Nations League, but also has experience in the freaking Europa League. Arguably the second-best club tournament in the world behind the Champions League. This guy is a brick wall in the net, not letting up any goals in the two most recent games against Mexico and Canada that Team USA played in. We also have other international returns in Deandre Yedlin and Jesus Ferreira. Both of them have more World Cup experience than every single one of the Jamaican players combined. I’m not saying that makes Team USA better, but it sure can’t make them worse.
