Game Analysis:
Following a rivalry win on the road last week against Iowa State, Iowa has reclaimed their place in the AP Poll, coming in at #25, where they were to start the season. Their efforts to keep climbing the poll will continue this week when they return home to host the Western Michigan Broncos. The Hawkeyes’ formula in their 20-13 win last week was the same as we’ve seen for years now: their defense absolutely dominated their way to a low-scoring win, where the offense struggles to really get into rhythm. Western Michigan, on the other hand, comes into this game with a 1-1 record following a blowout 48-7 loss at Syracuse. The Broncos actually scored a 75-yard TD on the second play of the game to jump out to a lead, but were completely dominated after.
If Western Michigan was unable to get anything going last week at Syracuse, then they really have their work cut out for them this weekend in Iowa City. The Iowa defense will be the best defense the Broncos have faced recently, and the state of their quarterback position is not ideal for that. QB Jack Salopek started both games so far, but hasn’t been particularly effective, and was replaced during last week’s blowout loss. Potentially the only positive thing going for the Broncos is the fact that they were at least able to keep Syracuse in check during the second half, allowing just 3 points, so they hope to be able to build on that against the Hawkeyes.
Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz has a clause in his contract, which says that in order for him to return next season, his offense must average at least 25 points per game, and they must win 7 games. The team is off to a 2-0 start, so there should be no trouble in that department, but with the team averaging just 22 points per game, results are going to need to start coming quickly in order for their offensive coordinator to come back. Cade McNamara struggled in the second game vs. the Cyclones, and the offense really couldn’t get much going for most of the game. The defense was once again elite, however, and proved that they are still good enough to carry this team past anyone. I don’t expect that to change this week, with another low-scoring, blowout win for the Hawkeyes.
